Distinguished and Famous people from Cabonne
📚 A. B. 'Banjo' Paterson
Banjo Paterson spent his earliest childhood at Buckenbah Station near Yeoval, giving Cabonne a connection with the beginnings of a major literary career. He was born at Narrambla near Orange, rather than in Yeoval itself, and later grew up at Illalong. His adult work combined law, journalism and poetry, with ballads that became central to Australia's popular literary tradition. Buckenbah belongs to the early family history that preceded that public career.
🧭 Yuranigh
Wiradjuri man Yuranigh accompanied Thomas Mitchell on his final Queensland expedition in 1845–46. He died near Molong, and his grave at the former Gamboola Station was marked by Aboriginal carved trees and a European memorial. The surviving site records different forms of respect for a man whose knowledge and assistance contributed to inland exploration. It is a significant Cabonne connection in its own right, placing an Aboriginal participant alongside the expedition leaders whose names more often dominate accounts of nineteenth-century travel.
